Episode 286: Modern America

After something of a soft start, this epsiode gets rolling on some of the more frequently discussed issues of the past week. That's something of a departure for us, but one that needs to be made from time to time. Even though it wasn't on the list we even got in some conversation about Syria and the NSA leaker.

There was a great turn-out both on TalkShoe and in Second Life. If you find yourself free on a Sunday evening, stop by and join us. We'd love to have you as a part of the conversation!

The recommended book for this week is "Sh-t My Dad Says" by Justin Halpern. It's an interesting look and a reminder to delve beyond the gruff exterior of people around us.

It's true that we're living in a different kind of America than the founders. Technology has taken the country places never imagined, yet that does not mean our current crop of professional politicians have no precedent for how to do the people's work. In this episode we're looking at how technology is challenging and changing the way America moves forward.

Another busy news week! There are many other articles that deserve some attention and while we'd love to have the time to discuss all of them, we simply can't. Here are the other stories that came across our Twitter feed:

Articles for Episode 285: Addressing Growth

As time marches on, one thing that has to be considered by any organization is how it can expand membership for the future. Tonight we have a special guest, Mike Garcar, Field Director for the Ohio College Republican Federation. We'll be talking with him about the challenges that the GOP faces reaching out to the millennial generation.

We've also got our regular round of articles that we'll be discussing, hopefully with Mike joining us to add his perspective, so it's going to be a busy show!

A few other articles in the list, not as many as other episodes but still some stores worth stirring up.

Video Comment 10: Leveling the Playing Field

This one was recorded a little over a week ago (springtime brings posting delays, as many know) but is definitely a relevant issue.

Whenever you hear the term "level playing field" come out of the mouths of politicians, ask yourself the two logical questions I posed back in video comment #8.  In this latest abuse of the sports reference, they're talking about the Internet Sales Tax.  Here are my thoughts on that:

Episode 279: Are They Even Trying?

Another week, another late posting for an episode... I'm working not to make a habit of this, sorry again. This episode was a lot of fun, especially when it came to the jokes. I'm pretty sure we haven't had this irreverent of an episode in quite some time! Ken wasn't with us but Larry stepped in quite well.

We also had the chance to have a follow up conversation about home-schooling and some of the differences that were expressed between Larry and I. One of the great things about our show is the fact that we can disagree without being disagreeable and last week's episode left a something of a bitter taste that needed to be addressed.

In this episode we are going to look at some of the things that are being said as well as what the media purports is action by elected officials, candidates and others. Episode 275: Direct Your Attention

Please ignore the man behind the curtain! Actually, with the theme of "look over there" firmly embedded, we managed to make it through most of the articles and ended up closing on a bit of a different note than originally expected.

While the majority of news and social media have their collective eyes glued to the same-sex marriage debate, other things have been going on. There seems to be a lot of misdirection happening and in this episode we're going to discuss some of the more disturbing articles that have come out. Articles for this episode:

Episode 269: It Drives Me Crazy

The premise for this episode started with a book about pollution that flowed with waste about fecal matter and other things. From there, the show's content hilighted some examples of the mental sludge that passes for policy and position.

We've added a link to our new Zazzle.com store to the website. Right now there are only two products but we'll be adding more as time goes on. If you have ideas for products please email them to us at conservativepodcast@gmail.com.

A quick administrative note: This week and next week we will be recording on Monday nights at 8:30pm Eastern instead of Sunday nights. If you follow the live recording please be sure to update your schedules accordingly!

Episode 263: Broken Standards

Well, true to the subject there were lots of "broken" things to discuss.  It was an enjoyable time but also rather eye-opening when it comes to the American standards that seem to be in serious need of repair.

Please be sure to vote in our merchandise poll to identify those things you'd be willing to buy from the podcast.

Episode 262: Lemmings or Thelma and Louise?

It's funny what happens when you plan out an episode like this one.  I wasn't sure what the call-in volume was going to be like and it turned out to be pretty big!  My co-worker Marshall joined us (he's the one that stated that, "know I know how Juan Willaims feels.") as well as just about the entire regular crew!  The show started off somber but when we started the political talk it turned into something else entirely!

It's the end of 2012 and it looks like our pals inside the beltway are all auditioning for the role of Enigmatic Good/Bad Guy. It appears that the nation is going rumble past that dreaded deadline for sequestration. We're going to try and figure out if it's because the folks in DC are more like Thelma and Louise or lemmings.

Here are the articles for the podcast:
And of course there's other stuff to read!

Episode 261: Coal for Christmas

Something of an odd Christmas present, but the show's recorded and ready for download several hours early!  There was a scheduling conflict so Ken and I decided that rather than push the recording off we'd do the show at 2pm today.

We talked about the folks that should and should not get a lump of coal for Christmas this year.  I'll be posting a picture of my new voter registration card as well, following up on a promise made a few episodes back.

Articles for Episode 261: Coal for Christmas

This episode is being recorded earlier in the day (2:00pm Eastern) due to a scheduling conflict this evening.

What can I say? There are some folks that just deserve coal in their stockings. We're going to be talking about them, and some that don't deserve it as well. We didn't want to talk about just the gun issue, but it is on the list today.

Here are the articles:
And yup, there's more to discuss as well. Here are the stories that didn't make the list.

I'm not sure if it's the holiday season, the weather or the pending doom of the Mayan calander. Either we're going crazy or it's the new normal. Tonight we're going to talk about fascinating stuff, though sometimes not fascinating in a good way. Here are the articles we've got to dissect:
Of course there's a lot more going on out there. Here's some more reading

Articles for Episode 258: Failures At Home and Abroad

Back to our regular time, we've got a bit of a doozie planned. Heading into the end of the year we see the status quo acting exactly as expected. There are things that need to be dealt with both domestically and abroad and the handling of it leaves much to be desired.

Before we get into the articles, I have to ask a favor. Please go to Red State Talk Radio's 2012 Talk Show of the Year poll and vote for our show. We can't do this without your support. Here are the articles for this episode:
You can bet there were other articles. Here they are:

Episode 255: Veterans Day Interview

This turned out to be part one of two interviews that we had originally planned.  Tim Heald is a former Army LRS Scout, discussed his experience with a politicized Department of Veteran's Affairs.  His blog can be found at Intolerable-Acts.org.  Specifically he is working to correct, "The VA’s abuse of the fiduciary program, and the violation of veterans’ 2nd Amendment Rights under the Constitution of the United States of America."
