Episode 286: Modern America

After something of a soft start, this epsiode gets rolling on some of the more frequently discussed issues of the past week. That's something of a departure for us, but one that needs to be made from time to time. Even though it wasn't on the list we even got in some conversation about Syria and the NSA leaker.

There was a great turn-out both on TalkShoe and in Second Life. If you find yourself free on a Sunday evening, stop by and join us. We'd love to have you as a part of the conversation!

The recommended book for this week is "Sh-t My Dad Says" by Justin Halpern. It's an interesting look and a reminder to delve beyond the gruff exterior of people around us.

It's true that we're living in a different kind of America than the founders. Technology has taken the country places never imagined, yet that does not mean our current crop of professional politicians have no precedent for how to do the people's work. In this episode we're looking at how technology is challenging and changing the way America moves forward.

Another busy news week! There are many other articles that deserve some attention and while we'd love to have the time to discuss all of them, we simply can't. Here are the other stories that came across our Twitter feed:

Episode 284: For Their Own Good

It seems I managed to pull in articles that got everyone's blood boiling! This episode has to be one of the more lively in some time, and not because of bad jokes. All of our callers and a few folks in SecondLife had thoughts to add to the conversation

In our next episode we'll be talking with Mike Garcar, a Field Director for the Ohio College Republican Federation, Romney campaign worker and upcoming author. We'll be talking about his observations about engaging the millennial generation.

One of the things we count on elected and appointed officials to do is act in the best interests of their constituents. In this episode we are going to look at actions that have been taken where this does not seem to be the case. From those who have won elections down to school officials, it seems that reactions and plans are more of an assault on sensibility than anything.

This episode is truly a tale of two podcasts. There was a completely different episode that could have been put together in the articles listed below. Take some time and browse them at your leisure, and if you want to comment on an article feel free!

Episode 283: Disagreeable Listeners

This was quite the interesting show, with an opening conversation about Memorial Day followed by a very good discussion on the subject. Some of the conversation got rather interesting and there were some good points brought up. There are also some examples where the group didn't agree, yet we managed to follow our own rule of disagreeing without being disagreeable.

As we discussed during that opening segment, I hope everyone has/had a safe and happy Memorial Day!

It's no secret that there are lots of things we hear in the news that we don't like. That's part of the basis and material for this podcast! In this episode, however, we're going to talk what some of the things that elected and public officials are saying they are hearing and don't like. It seems that the distaste for the goings-on in the beltway (and some places beyond) are hitting people from all political bents the wrong way.

Twitter was a little slow this week for us. It might have been the preparation for the Memorial Day weekend or just a slow news cycle. There are some other stories that should be read, here's what didn't make the episode this week:

Episode 282: Making Life Difficult

Wow, talking about making life difficult indeed! First, there have been technical issues with TalkShoe for the last two weeks. Then we throw in my own verbal malfunctions during the show, and the subjects and excellent turnout made this an episode that was fun and frustrating at the same time. We had great input from all of our guests, both in TalkShoe and in Second Life. If you haven't been able to make a live recording session, I'd invite you to do so!

We did work very hard to keep the conversation civil. Sometimes we didn't stay on the list of articles but that just added spice to the conversation. Definitely worth the listen. One administrative note. Due to technical confusion, last week's episode did not make it to the Red State Talk Radio network on time. It will be running until Wednesday, when this episode will replace it. We'll be back on schedule there starting with the next episode.

There are times when maintaining civility in political discourse is going to be a challenging task. This is one such week, as the articles for the show attest. We're going to try to get through a conversation about these with the best possible attitude. Should be an interesting challenge!

Articles for this episode:
This week provided a lot of different things to discuss beyond what was selected for the show. Here are some of the other articles that were tweeted @ECConservative:

Episode 277: Do You Hear What I Hear

This episode introduces a slightly different format, with part of the intro moved to the ending which lets us get started much faster. It was a fun episode, though there are a couple of areas where I should have censored Shorahmin. We'll forgive him his BS lines... though the media is offered no similar reprieve.

We've added Bitcoin donations for those that trade in that virtual currency.

When you're listening to the news (or watching or reading), what do you hear? What do you see? There's an element of control that is being exerted by both the media and political groups. We've said this before but there are some really big examples of stories that won't be getting that much exposure but still need to be known.

Articles for this episode:
There was a whole other line of discussion that we could have taken this week! There will probably be a few videos recorded from these articles, but if you want to add your own comments please feel free!

Video Comment 9: When is it Conspiracy?

So there are times when something sounds like a tinfoil-hat conspiracy, but what is that tipping point?  In this video I talk about the claim made by an attorney that police actions to confiscate his weapons weren't accidental, rather they were an attempt to see how far the NY SAFE Act could be pushed.

How much of this is real and how much is paranoia is something the general public may never know.  Here's a link to part of the story: http://www.wben.com/pages/16021389.php?contentType=4&contentId=12784239  I've tweeted other relevant articles as well.

Video Comment 8: Two Logical Questions

Well, the morning commute concept seems to work well and so I put it to use yet again.  Never fear, when you see both hands off the wheel, I'm stopped!

While I bring up two specific issues in this video episode, the questions I raise can be asked of any political response to "an issue."  It happens that as examples I use gun control and standardized testing.

Articles for Episode 273: It's About Control

A common phrase in the gun control debate is, "it's not about guns, it's about control." That rings true there, but it's true in almost every area the government is taking special interest in these days. In this episode we're going to talk about a number of different areas where this is starting to be more plain.

We had a great time talking with Bob and Judith about the organization We The People of NY and their case against the state. Learn more about the organization at WeThePeopleOfNY.org. We have also asked to be included in follow-up information as the case moves forward.

We're working on new designs for our products in our Zazzle store. Support the podcast and enjoy a hot beverage of your choice at the same time. When folks ask about your mug, it's a great time to talk about the issues... or the podcast, that's up to you. There's no doubt that times are challenging for American citizens. The economy's bipolar approach to recovery, gun rights being challenged and educational standards in the tank. Tonight we're going to look at these issues in a bit more detail.

For this episode we have with us Bob Schulz and Judith Whitmore of We The People of New York. They have filed suit against the state of New York on the constitutionality and process related to the passing of the New York SAFE Gun Control Act. Learn more about their organization and petitions at WeThePeopleofNY.org.  You can read the press release about their lawsuit by clicking here.

Again, another short list of other articles. Definitely some that bear more conversation though.

Episode 270: Behind the Green Curtain

Well, as promised there are a lot of things out there that are being used to distract and misdirect the American public that we talked about in this episode. We had quite a time breaking things down and pulling them apart.

Watching the news and events that happen on a weekly basis, I've come to the conclusion that there is some serious manipulating going on by either the President or someone close to him. In this episode we're going to look at some blatant examples of this.

After this episode's recording we are back to our normal Sunday night recording schedule!

Thanks to everyone for working with us on the change and for your continued support! Articles for this episode:

Episode 269: It Drives Me Crazy

The premise for this episode started with a book about pollution that flowed with waste about fecal matter and other things. From there, the show's content hilighted some examples of the mental sludge that passes for policy and position.

We've added a link to our new Zazzle.com store to the website. Right now there are only two products but we'll be adding more as time goes on. If you have ideas for products please email them to us at conservativepodcast@gmail.com.

Sometimes when I'm looking through articles and I see something that drives me absolutely crazy. In this episode we're going to look through things that drive all of us crazy, and for good reason! Join us for a conversation about guns, religion, spending and soda.

A quick administrative note: This week and next week we will be recording on Monday nights at 8:30pm Eastern instead of Sunday nights. If you follow the live recording please be sure to update your schedules accordingly!
