Episode 345 Recording Delay

We are delaying our recording by a day, vacation got in the way of show prep!

HOWEVER, there is a change we're going to be making to the show and the audience is an integral part of it.  We're introducing something called "Mad Libs for President".  If you've never heard of the concept of Mad Libs, it's a short selection of text with key words removed.  The job of the audience is to provide words of the right type (noun, verb, adjective, adverb) without knowing where they go or how they will be used.  It promises to be entertaining if nothing else!

We're going to start this week.  Please send me the following words either as a comment on this post, a comment on the Facebook page or via email the following words and I'll put them together for tomorrow night's recording.  I need the following:
  • Article of Clothing (plural)
  • Part of the Body (plural)
  • Two (w) nouns
  • Six (6) Plural nouns
  • Six (6) Adjectives
  • One Verb
  • One Verb ending in "ing"
Please keep in mind that while this podcast requires a level of maturity is also must be fit for public presentation,  Please do not send any rude, crude or otherwise "bleep"able words.

Thanks!

Recording Delay for Next Episode

Due to a scheduling conflict, this week's podcast episode will be recorded on Monday, July 28th at 8:30pm.  Join us for the recording session if you can!  I will work on getting the articles together before the end of the night so folks will have more of a chance to prepare.

No Recording Tonight

Due to some unforeseen circumstances (not as serious as the last time) we will not be recording a new episode tonight.

Announcement: No New Episode This Week

We won't be recording an episode for this week.  There are some things that happened that must be attended to from a personal perspective to even schedule a different time.

We will be back to our regular schedule on Sunday, April 27th, 2014.  Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Episode 325: What Are We Learning?

I had to clarify with this episode that it's not, "what have we learned." Rather, it's about what we are learning based on the articles we discussed. We had an engaging and fun conversation.

Administrative note from Hatton: Episode posts to the main site may be delayed until after the end of April.  I'm working on finishing up my MBA and with the exception of time for show prep and recording/editing I have very little extra time or energy during the week.  I will try to get shows up to the site as quickly as possible.  If you want faster access to episodes you can subscribe to the show on iTunes or the main Talkshoe RSS feed.  The only disadvantage of subscribing there is any extra content I might post (highly unlikely for the next few months) would be missing.  I sincerely appreciate your understanding and patience.

Click Here to download the podcast, or listen using the Blubrry player (the blue ball on the right of the page).

Also, please be sure to visit our sponsor! You can get a free 30 day trial at Audible.com as well as a free audiobook by going to http://www.audibletrial.com/eastcoastconservative and signing up. We're still recommending The Libery Amendments by Mark Levin as your free audio book with the trial.

Announcement: Talkshoe Maintenance

Happy New Year!

Unfortunately my first post of the year is to announce a temporary outage.  TalkShoe is in the process of upgrading their storage network, causing problems with anyone that wants to download the podcast or listen using the web player.  I will update this post as I learn more.

Announcement: Expansion Opportunity

During the last episode of the podcast I mentioned that there is an exciting opportunity available for the show.  We have been contacted by the folks over at Boost Radio Network.  This is a new internet only radio station that is launching in January 2014.  They are creating a network of shows that spans the spectrum, from politics to money to home improvement and more.

This opportunity has the potential to grow the audience in a number of different ways.  Our show will be run live during it's regular weekly broadcast.  We will still be distributing via TalkShoe, iTunes, Stitcher, the website and the Red State Talk Radio Network.  There is also the ability to use their interface which allows for live call-in participation.  Additionally there are potential advertiser opportunities based on the association with the network that will be a better deal for our show than what has been available in the past.

Unfortunately, participation in the network is not free.  Like many networks there is a charge for using the software and bandwidth.  I'm not going to go into the specifics for this, these fees are negotiated and contracted with each participating production.

This podcast has been a passionate but largely unfunded project for Ken and I up to this point.  This opportunity is game-changing but it is not something that we take lightly.  Our focus in going down this path is more about spreading our conservative message and influence and less about making any kind of return.  It's also not something that Ken and I can absorb so we are reaching out to our listening audience to help.  If you are interested in helping out, please continue reading.

Video Comment 10: Leveling the Playing Field

This one was recorded a little over a week ago (springtime brings posting delays, as many know) but is definitely a relevant issue.

Whenever you hear the term "level playing field" come out of the mouths of politicians, ask yourself the two logical questions I posed back in video comment #8.  In this latest abuse of the sports reference, they're talking about the Internet Sales Tax.  Here are my thoughts on that:

Video Comment 9: When is it Conspiracy?

So there are times when something sounds like a tinfoil-hat conspiracy, but what is that tipping point?  In this video I talk about the claim made by an attorney that police actions to confiscate his weapons weren't accidental, rather they were an attempt to see how far the NY SAFE Act could be pushed.

How much of this is real and how much is paranoia is something the general public may never know.  Here's a link to part of the story: http://www.wben.com/pages/16021389.php?contentType=4&contentId=12784239  I've tweeted other relevant articles as well.

Video Comment 8: Two Logical Questions

Well, the morning commute concept seems to work well and so I put it to use yet again.  Never fear, when you see both hands off the wheel, I'm stopped!

While I bring up two specific issues in this video episode, the questions I raise can be asked of any political response to "an issue."  It happens that as examples I use gun control and standardized testing.

Video Comment 7: Nerdy Dirty Words

I've moved the video comment recording from the house into the car and like the results.  In this video I share the concept of a game that my kids have been playing called the "Nerdy Dirty Word" where you take an every-day word and turn it into a game of verbal tag.  This seems to be a running game that politicians and the media use, though we put the label "hot-button issue" on it.

Non-Political Rant: The Reality TV Farce

I put this on Facebook last night after discovering the latest "Celeb-reality" TV show.  I know it isn't political but for me it just points out that some people will watch anything!

I have to vent for a minute - not about politics, but about TV and the latest "Celeb-Reality" show. Folks, I'm talking about ABC's Splash. That's right, from the network that brought us great things like "Extreme Makeover, Home Edition", "The Sing Off", "Dancing With the Stars" (hey, I don't like it but it's apparently got legs for the market) we now have a TV show with stars in a *diving competition*.

Video Episode 5: An Open Letter to Republicans

This is my "response to the election" post.  It's an open letter to conservatives and Republicans.  I am including this post as both a video and the actual letter.  Some of the wording is a bit different but it's worth watching and then reading.

For those that have listened to our Election Night coverage final episode on the podcast feed (you can get it by going to our TalkShoe page), you will no doubt hear how I initially reacted to the election results.  I, like so many other conservatives, thought that there was a good chance for Governor Romney to win the election.  I've taken a few days to digest the truth and fiction of the election results and want to share my thoughts and ideas on where we as conservatives need to go in order to move forward.  This is especially true for the Republican party.

Election Night Coverage

Yes folks, the election is finally upon us!  It is time for the citizens of the United States to practice their civic duty and cast their ballots for the people they feel best suited to serve the nation in a number of different races.  It is also time for people to vote on the various ballot initiatives that are presented to them.

I know that we're a conservative podcast, however if you follow us but not our ideology, it's still time for you to vote!  Let your voice be heard.

Now, for those of you that don't know who to vote for, I'll suggest that you take a peek over at ISideWith.com and take their quiz.  Their "candidate match-up" compares your answers and priorities with the people running for office in the Republican, Democrat, Libertarian, Green, Constitution and Justice parties.  Not all candidates will be on all ballots but this gives you a percentage comparison for you to go on.

Tomorrow night we've got a special treat lined up for everyone!  Polls start closing at 7pm Eastern and that's when the traditional round-table podcasts will begin.  Adam Graham, host of the Truth and Hope Report will be providing the call-in space for 4 discussions, spaced to match the various poll closings.  Here's the schedule:

A Huge Thank You!

I wanted to take a moment to post some updates on the podcast listening audience.  Statistics are somewhat difficult to track as we have multiple distribution channels, so I'm going to hi-light the two that just floored me this week.

First of all, as many of you know our show is a part of the Red State Talk Radio network.  They track their statistics monthly and announce the top 5 in total listeners per month.  It was just announced that for the month of October, the East Coast Conservative Podcast was #4 (of 23 total shows) on the Top Listeners list on the station!  This is with our show running beside podcasts that record more episodes than we do!  That can only happen with your support and we sincerely appreciate it!

The second equally humbling statistic that came out is that this week's downloads on TalkShoe and iTunes absolutely decimated our all time top number of downloads!  The TalkShoe numbers are tabulated weekly and include downloads for all episodes from 1 to current (we're at 253).  Our previous high for downloads just over 500 for a single week.  While the numbers are still being counted, as of just after midnight the download count is currently over 700!

This means that folks are listening to me when I ask to, "blog about us, tell five of your friends."  We are humbled by your continual support.  Thank you so much for that and please keep it up!  Tell your friends about us, blog about us, follow the Facebook page and our Twitter feed.  If you're interested, check out the Audible.com trial and support the show.  If an article moves you, comment on it and share it with your own Twitter, Facebook or Blog.

Again, thanks so much and keep listening for different words in a different order!

Posting by Request: Fighting the VA

The original subject of this message was The VAs abuse of the fiduciary program, and the denial of veterans 2nd Amendment Rights under the Constitution of the United States of America.  It is a personal appeal from a friend of mine, Tim Heald.  You can follow Tim at http://intolerable-acts.org/

As many of you know I have bee struggling with the VA over the fiduciary program and the 2nd Amendment. Specifically over the lies they are telling vets that are added to the fiduciary program. I have been unable to ascertain who is even responsible, much less have my grievances addressed.  As such I've decided to go outside the VA to attempt to rectify the situation. Today I contacted the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs. This is what I sent them through Facebook, email and the form on their web site:

Gentlemen and woman of the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs,

My name is Timothy Heald. I am a 100% disabled veteran, a prior service Infantryman, Paratrooper and Long Range Surveillance Senior Scout Observer.  I served in the Army and the Army National Guard for a total of 8 years, with 2 deployments. I ETS'd from service in Feb. 2006.

I recently received a letter from the DVA informing me that I had been found incompetent to handle my funds, and had been assigned a fiduciary. While I disagree with this decision, that is not the primary cause of my decision to write to you today.

My motivation for instigating this discussion is located in the 4th paragraph of the letter I received notifying me of this decision. That paragraph states:

"As we advised you previously , the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act prohibits you from purchasing, possessing, receiving or transporting a firearm or ammunition based upon our determination that you are incompetent to handle your VA funds. You may be fined and/or imprisoned if you knowingly violate this law."

Interesting Unemployment Figures

Just after the first Presidential debate I heard a news commentator make the statement that, “states led by Republican governors have enjoyed lower unemployment than those with Democrat governors.” Rather than take this statement as pure fact, I decided to crunch the numbers and what I found was that she was absolutely right. I present here the findings of my analysis.

Initially I grabbed just the unemployment rate by month (January 2012 through August 2012) and got the following:

As you can see, month over month, Republican led states do indeed have a slight (the difference is minuscule in most cases) advantage over their Democrat counterparts. A colleague of mine suggested that I factor out those states where the Governor has been in office for less than two years to see if this held true. The logic behind his idea was that those who have been in office for less than two years would not have had a chance for their policies to truly take hold. Here are those results:

The number scale is smaller so the size of the bars might seem the same as above. In truth, they are not. There is a slightly more marked difference between the two.

Not satisfied with just pulling these numbers, I decided to pull in the party leadership of the Upper and Lower chamber for the state and compare those.

In Line at Wal-Mart

My good friend Fabian Story just posted the following on Facebook:
Ok, so as I am standing in line in Wal-Mart I am privy to a conversation that takes place between two very very verl large women who have carts full of junk foods and processed pre-cooked meals laughing and talking about the fact that the are now going to vote for Obama since they have received their new Obama phone and was able to drop their contract with Verizon and now pay 10.00 a month each for the same plan they were paying 69 for the equivalent services with Verizon. They then proceeded to tell me and another lady in the line that Obama is saving this nation by "giving" everyone healthcare, phones, paying off people's houses and making it harder on businesses to screw us.

I asked her where she worked and she told me she lives off of child support for 5 kids with 4 diff daddy's and she was not ashamed to tell me that she made more by lying in court and making them "pay" than getting a real job. She said that since she did not have to report Child Support as income she lived in "rent assisted" house, gets nearly 1600 in food stamps and other services and she sees this as her right. What are we becoming?
Now, if you talk to Democrats about those who leech off our public support system, they'll tell you these are "few and far between."  Unfortunately, this isn't the only story that I've heard that follows this same narrative. It seems to me like the exception, for some demographics, is becoming more and more the rule.

Even President Obama has said, "I think we should acknowledge that some welfare programs in the past were not well designed and in some cases did encourage dependency.… As somebody who worked in low-income neighborhoods, I've seen it where people weren't encouraged to work, weren't encouraged to upgrade their skills, were just getting a check, and over time their motivation started to diminish. And I think even if you’re progressive you've got to acknowledge that some of these things have not been well designed." (ref: President Obama Admits Welfare Encourages Dependency)

Apparently in some parts of the country, it's not just the past but also the present where this is the case.

Video Episode 4: Scary Games Politicans Play

I seem to be having more fun with this video stuff, so that means you'll be seeing more of it along with the weekly podcast recordings! Tonight I wanted to share my thoughts on two bits of absurdity. The first was the fact that a liberal candidate for State Senate in Maine was Slammed for World of Warcraft Fandom. The second relates to the recently release unemployment numbers. My apologies if I offended any of you WoW players out there. I'm guessing my students were the exception... unfortunately they're also the only experience I have in real life!
