Episode 349: Some People Need Help

In contrast to last week's episode, this one hit on all cylinders and we were able to have a good, solid discussion about the various connotations to "needing help." These ranged from the "bless their heart" concept to legislative action to areas that truly do need a considered level of assistance.

We even started to talk about an article that was in the "extra reading" list (sorry about that, I couldn't continue on the nudist camp conversation) and brought up a local primary election for me that had me picking based on some very limited information.

There are different connotations of the phrase, "need help." In this episode we're going to explore a few of those. We've got articles looking at outrageous statements, strange mandates and areas where assistance is truly needed. Keeping with the changes there's no "fun" opening article, things are too important this week and the absurd can sometimes get in the way.

Episode 344: Your Policy is Showing

I'm not sure if we made our point tonight or not. We definitely highlighted some policies that are showing and even brought up the concept of action in Iraq as a way to distract the media from domestic news. That said, there were a few odd tangent circles that might make folks look at certain concepts from a different angle.

Two shout-outs from this episode. First, to Joesf a mote in the eye award for playing devil's advocate so perfectly on the college age free speech concept. Also, a mention of Rat Nation which is a fun blog I've started reading. They are where I saw the article about the Tiny House movement mentioned in this episode.

Every now and then we have to take a break from questioning the intelligence or sanity of various positions and point out the policy, or at least the perception of policy, that is laid out in the news. The democrats have done a fine job showing us where their priorities lie and in this episode we're going to look at those. Articles for this episode:

I think this was one of the more peaceable episodes. We managed to get through more articles than we usually do and there was a lot of ground covered.

Over the past week I've found a number of parody or satire articles that made their way to Facebook and/or Twitter as if they were true stories. In this episode we're going to look at articles that outline why we don't need our blood pressure raised by those parodies, real news is bad enough!

Something interesting, in last week's episode we has a number of visitors in Second Life that meant to bring more disruption than discussion. Unfortunately they partially succeeded, as they brought the sim down. In doing so, however, they failed to recognize that their presence increased the traffic to the site, the podcast and the sim. Our numbers have hit new highs and this week I was notified that our Twitter feed was added to the "Top Political Brains" list at Ticckle.com which apparently is an opinion conversation site.

These extra articles are also sources of ire for a variety of reasons.  There's more after the break...

Articles for Episode 329: Can't Want That

One of the cutest things I've heard was my then 4 year old nephew say, "can't want that!" He was talking about a bad thing happening and he had the perfect answer for it. In this episode we're going to look at a number of different articles that would bring out the same response.

As an administrative note, I'm working on changing the way show notes, articles and episode posts are presented here on the site. It may be more advantageous to go back to having a single post per week with both the links to the articles as well as the audio file itself. I'd like to get some feedback before implementing this change so please let me know what you think by emailing conservativepodcast@gmail.com. Thank you!

Episode 303: Cracks in the Facade

Yet again we have a case of an episode post lagging the recording by a week... I have plenty of reasons but again I apologize.  Maybe I should take a pay cut...

It turns out that folks didn't really disagree with the premise of this episode, that more and more of the American public are starting to see through the cracks at what's really going on in Washington.

Articles for Episode 303: Cracks in the Façade

There is so much media coverage about the failing health care websites and continued shutdown that we're going to be looking at other things in this episode. We're looking deeper, past the posturing and endless press conferences at some of the signs that the government is starting to crack.

Be sure, there are those stalwarts that will stick to their… positions. There are also articles that are coming out showing very disturbing events that, if done by anyone else, would generate calls for termination if not prison time. Their façade is starting to crack all over the place and even their usual cheerleaders can't patch everything up. Articles for this episode:
Those that watch our Twitter feed at ECConservative will notice that not all of the articles tweeted over the past week are showing up here this time. We had something of a "twittersplosion" and the articles below are the more relevant (or less repetitive) of the activity.

Episode 299: Mind Your Own House Part 2

As promised, we continued going over the amendments proposed in Mark Levin's The Liberty Amendments. It's an interesting collection of history and suggestions for cementing the spirit of the founders back into the Constition. Again there wasn't one that every person on the call agreed with but the book brings out the way the country has changed substantially since its founding.

Be sure to be available for our 300th episode! We are going to be joined by Assemblywoman Jane Corwin for the show to talk about New York, Gun Control and what's going on to address the overreach that has happened in the state. It's going to be a special episode for a special milestone!

There's the phrase, "Mind Your Own House," which is typically uttered to someone that is too busy calling out the failings of another while their own situation isn't much better. We seem to be in that state in the US now. We are continuing the conversation around Mark Levin's proposed Liberty Amendments and some news stories that fit in neatly with his suggestions.

Episode 282: Making Life Difficult

Wow, talking about making life difficult indeed! First, there have been technical issues with TalkShoe for the last two weeks. Then we throw in my own verbal malfunctions during the show, and the subjects and excellent turnout made this an episode that was fun and frustrating at the same time. We had great input from all of our guests, both in TalkShoe and in Second Life. If you haven't been able to make a live recording session, I'd invite you to do so!

We did work very hard to keep the conversation civil. Sometimes we didn't stay on the list of articles but that just added spice to the conversation. Definitely worth the listen. One administrative note. Due to technical confusion, last week's episode did not make it to the Red State Talk Radio network on time. It will be running until Wednesday, when this episode will replace it. We'll be back on schedule there starting with the next episode.

There are times when maintaining civility in political discourse is going to be a challenging task. This is one such week, as the articles for the show attest. We're going to try to get through a conversation about these with the best possible attitude. Should be an interesting challenge!

Episode 280: Communication Necessities

Administrative comment: Continually apologizing for the late posts and then posting late the following week is getting a tad repetitive, so I'll explain rather than make excuses. There are some big things being planned for the podcast as well as a new endeavor. Nothing is going to change for quite some time (in Internet terms of time, at least), however if you're a blogger, podcaster or vodcaster that is interested in hearing more about the rumblings of an interesting project, contact me directly.

This week we talked about the things necessary for a good, civil conversation. We also identified the real definition of the concept and also what it is not. Civility does not equate with watering down or with changing a message just to make it palatable to a wide audience. If you want to hear more, listen to the podcast!

There are some required aspects for effective communication, whether the subject is politics, the weather or a shopping list. In this episode we're going to look at some news articles that are examples of where these are noticeably missing from one side or the other. Let's talk about them and see how we can improve the conversation!

Episode 278: Safety Precautions

A bit late getting this episode posted to the website, sorry about that. It was a good conversation about the events in Boston, while working hard to discuss new items and not simply go on about the same issues everyone else had been talking about.

There was quite the conversation about schooling, especially home schooling in light of some of the articles that have come out lately. Which camp do you fall in? Do you think parents should keep their kids in the system and fight the bureaucracy from within or pull their kids out and challenge the system on behalf of others?

After the events of the past week, what are we doing to keep things safe? What's happening in the government to maintain security levels and how are educators working to help our children stay safe? Based on the articles for this episode, it's a rather confusing and twisted answer. Join us to discuss these and other things!

While it's not on the article list, we will be talking about the bombing in Boston as well.  I am specifically not including any of the "liberals had their mind made up," "Bostonians gave up their guns" or any other of the rants that have been flowing around the 'net with reckless abandon.  We're really shooting for, "different words in a different order," this week.

This episode introduces a slightly different format, with part of the intro moved to the ending which lets us get started much faster. It was a fun episode, though there are a couple of areas where I should have censored Shorahmin. We'll forgive him his BS lines... though the media is offered no similar reprieve.

We've added Bitcoin donations for those that trade in that virtual currency.

When you're listening to the news (or watching or reading), what do you hear? What do you see? There's an element of control that is being exerted by both the media and political groups. We've said this before but there are some really big examples of stories that won't be getting that much exposure but still need to be known.

There was a whole other line of discussion that we could have taken this week! There will probably be a few videos recorded from these articles, but if you want to add your own comments please feel free!

Video Comment 7: Nerdy Dirty Words

I've moved the video comment recording from the house into the car and like the results.  In this video I share the concept of a game that my kids have been playing called the "Nerdy Dirty Word" where you take an every-day word and turn it into a game of verbal tag.  This seems to be a running game that politicians and the media use, though we put the label "hot-button issue" on it.
