Articles for Episode 349: Some People Need Help

There are different connotations of the phrase, "need help." In this episode we're going to explore a few of those. We've got articles looking at outrageous statements, strange mandates and areas where assistance is truly needed. Keeping with the changes there's no "fun" opening article, things are too important this week and the absurd can sometimes get in the way.

Episode 347: Jumping the Shark

We managed to talk about jumping the shark without doing so ourselves (unless you count the madlibs, I don't). It was fun but if you're Obama-sensitive you might want to turn away. There are a lot of interesting nuggets, including mentioning of an NPR story about the EU's regulation on vacuum cleaners and Happy Days.

For those of you who missed the MadLib during the recording, here are the results:
A recent scary poll shows that the majority of people are terrified of public governing.  They would rather walk across burning jacobites or swim in goat-infested waters than give a speech in front of nuns.  This hearty fear can be overcome in five easy voters:
1. Organize all of your gym teachers on a piece of plank.
2. Remember to start your speech with a funny Senator.
3. When speaking, look your audience straight in the feet and speak in a strong and stupid voice.
4. Be simple.  Never use damaged words that are over the audiences eyes.
5. Always keep a pitcher of mercury next to you, in case your shin goes dry.

The concept of Jumping the Shark is used when a production does something extraordinary in order to attract attention but instead signals its decline. The phrase came from the Happy Days episode in which Fonzie literally jumped a shark in a stunt.

These days, the term applies to almost anything and tonight we're going to look at politicians that have been doing an excellent job at it.

Episode 345: Let's Just Talk

This episode went better than planned. It didn't exactly follow the article list but we did talk about them. Two new things were introduced as well, the Mad Lib opening as well as the Constitutional Quiz Cards. Both worked well as a part of the show.

I'll be posting the words for next week's Mad Lib on Wednesday or Thursday. You can be a part of the show by adding your words! The more we get the more interesting the results can be!

In this episode we're going to "just talk". Yes, there's a list of articles but they're only guidelines in case nobody decides to pick up the open mic. If you haven't please send us your Mad Lib words before the show starts!

Episode 338: Poor Choices

As I said in the show notes, everyone makes poor choices. For this episode I wonder if some of the articles don't fall into this category, not because they weren't worth some aspect of discussion but because we barely got through half of them!

Episode 335: Missing the Point

Wow, give us a week off and a good topic and we come out swinging! This was an absolute blast of a podcast and we managed to get through some of the most interesting articles before I had to call time.

In this episode we discussed a number of different articles that had more than one point, regardless of how the author wanted things to be read. We worked hard not to miss them but have a listen and let us know if something fell through the cracks.

There are times when we start talking about something and discover that one or more of us missed the major point in an article. In this episode we are going to look at a number of articles and hope that the point is not missed, either by ourselves or others.

Things have stabilized around here and we should not have any surprise missing episodes moving forward. Thank you for your understanding last week, it really was unavoidable. Articles for this episode:

It seems there are a lot of attempts by well meaning types to save the American people from their own actions. In this episode we are going to look at a number of these ranging from state to national issues.

I have decided to move in a different direction with the changes I posted about last week.  For now things will appear and run as they have.  With the summer coming on, there are a number of initiatives that I have planned, including a platform migration and restarting the video comments.  I'll post more as those plans solidify.

Episode 326: Talking About Justice

Justice, it seems, comes in many different shapes and sizes. We started off the conversation with a good discussion about areas where the, "right thing" was done… and then there was the conversation about welfare in Louisiana. There was a good counter-point brought up by Toawa with regards to the concept of controlling where people spend their money regardless of source.

Where do you see justice being served correctly? What about abuses of the system or trying to use the system to create abuse? Let us know! We'd love to see some comments on the articles we posted.

There are times when justice is served and times when it is abused. In this episode we are going to be looking at both of these scenarios tonight including a case of poetic justice that cannot be missed.

Sadly, this will be our last episode on the Boost Radio Network.  I want to thank the station for their support and the opportunity to learn more about both the radio industry as a whole and content placement concepts as a whole.  We will continue to play on the Red State Talk Radio network and be available, as always, in podcast form.

I'm a bit late in posting this episode, I'll blame it on the polar vortex. We had a lot of fun with this episode discussing different articles that all come from the "you can't make this up" stack.

Every week we open with a fun or human interest story and through the recording we try to have fun with the conversation. In this episode we're going to look at some stories that fall under the heading of, "you just can't make this stuff up!" Whether we're looking at actual clowns, spending, marriage or climate change these articles will definitely start a conversation. How much of it turns into rolling punch-lines is up for debate!

There were a lot of these kinds of articles this week. Not all could make the list so here are some others.

Episode 321: Selective Prosecution and Enforcement

This episode almost got me in trouble! Not from anything I said but because it got a bit lound and I had to raise my voice. We had a lot of interaction with callers and folks participating in TalkShoe and SecondLife! We actually stayed on topic more often than not and there are some good learning moments amongst the laughter.

In our last episode we talked about folks that were legitimately using different systems and concepts in unexpected ways. In this one we look at some instances where people are trying to use the system selectively for their own gain. We're going to discuss these and their impact on both the Rule of Law and the American psyche.

Thanks to your support, we are on the air with Boost Radio Network! Listen in 7-8pm on Wednesday nights. Episode 320: Using the System

Another fun episode and I tried to keep it on subject this week! Lots of interesting bits of information was discussed and ideas shared. One clarification that I want to make is that the topic, "using the system" does not mean cheating it. The articles we got to were examples of legitimate use of various policies and programs put in place.

It's generally understood that politicians create bureaucracies and that people will find ways to exploit them. In this episode we're going to look at evidence of exploitation of the policies that have been put in place recently by a myriad of groups.

This was a bit more sedate of an episode. These happen from time to time, the subject is a solid one and the information is good. There are some areas where Joesf and I had different takes on an item, especially with the budget bill that was recently passed by the House.
