Episode 282: Making Life Difficult

Wow, talking about making life difficult indeed! First, there have been technical issues with TalkShoe for the last two weeks. Then we throw in my own verbal malfunctions during the show, and the subjects and excellent turnout made this an episode that was fun and frustrating at the same time. We had great input from all of our guests, both in TalkShoe and in Second Life. If you haven't been able to make a live recording session, I'd invite you to do so!

We did work very hard to keep the conversation civil. Sometimes we didn't stay on the list of articles but that just added spice to the conversation. Definitely worth the listen. One administrative note. Due to technical confusion, last week's episode did not make it to the Red State Talk Radio network on time. It will be running until Wednesday, when this episode will replace it. We'll be back on schedule there starting with the next episode.

There are times when maintaining civility in political discourse is going to be a challenging task. This is one such week, as the articles for the show attest. We're going to try to get through a conversation about these with the best possible attitude. Should be an interesting challenge!

This week provided a lot of different things to discuss beyond what was selected for the show. Here are some of the other articles that were tweeted @ECConservative:

Episode 281: Following the Same Rules

This episode turned out well despite TalkShoe's best efforts! There were some technical difficulties causing the live recording to be delayed and I had limited control until the end of the show. Regardless, we had a good time talking about the popular issues from the past week from a different angle.

Don't forget to check out the articles for this episode and add your comments to our conversation. Even if we didn't talk about an article we'd like to hear your thoughts on something from the list!

During the last episode I talked about keeping the conversation civil, not being insulting or defamatory and looking at examples of stories where that didn't happen. Those concepts only work if both sides are playing by the same rules. It's apparent that this isn't the case, as is pointed out in the articles for this episode. The question is, what do we do about that and how should it be addressed moving forward?

Video Comment 10: Leveling the Playing Field

This one was recorded a little over a week ago (springtime brings posting delays, as many know) but is definitely a relevant issue.

Whenever you hear the term "level playing field" come out of the mouths of politicians, ask yourself the two logical questions I posed back in video comment #8.  In this latest abuse of the sports reference, they're talking about the Internet Sales Tax.  Here are my thoughts on that:

We talk about having living in a free country, and over the years what that has meant has changed. It's been stretched, poked and prodded where some things have changed and others have stayed the same. In this episode we're going to take a look at the latest round of attempts to change things.

A quick administrative note: This week we will be recording at our usual time, however for the last two weekends of this month we will be recording on Monday nights at 8:30pm instead of Sunday nights.

There are many other stories as well… not as many as last week, but they are still worth checking out!

We had an interesting time talking about some of the crazy things going on in the country, a good joke that gets ruined in translation to PG and actually made it through all of the articles this week!

I'm not sure if it's the holiday season, the weather or the pending doom of the Mayan calander. Either we're going crazy or it's the new normal. Tonight we're going to talk about fascinating stuff, though sometimes not fascinating in a good way. Here are the articles we've got to dissect:
Of course there's a lot more going on out there. Here's some more reading

Episode 258: Failures At Home and Abroad

In this episode we talked about the failures of both parties and were joined by a new caller, Naj, and gave an excellent example of how people of different political viewpoints can share some ideas and politely disagree on others.  The failures are happening right now from both parties and in some cases nothing has changed.

Back to our regular time, we've got a bit of a doozie planned. Heading into the end of the year we see the status quo acting exactly as expected. There are things that need to be dealt with both domestically and abroad and the handling of it leaves much to be desired.

Before we get into the articles, I have to ask a favor. Please go to Red State Talk Radio's 2012 Talk Show of the Year poll and vote for our show. We can't do this without your support. Here are the articles for this episode:
You can bet there were other articles. Here they are:

Episode 257: A Season of Change

For a late recording show, we had a good turn-out when it came to the audience!  In this episode we did something of a panel with Ken, Shorahmin, Joesf and Toawa adding their thoughts to what happened in the 2012 election.  You'll have to listen to hear their take on just where the GOP took missteps and wrong turns!  We also talked about some of the upcoming "gotcha" items embedded in that lovely little bill we call Obamacare.

We actually used articles from the "other links" section of the show notes... I think more than from the main list!

Important note: For those that join us for the live recording sessions, we will be starting the recording tonight at 10:00pm Eastern instead of our usual 8:30pm.  This is a one-time change to accomodate some schedule conflicts.

Contrary to what some may say, there is plenty that will be changing on the political scene in the next four years.  This episode is going to be our conversation point for the recap of the election and where the country appears to be heading for the future.

Here are the articles on the board for this episode.  We may or may not cover them:

Episode 253: A Growing Case

We coined a new Twitter hashtag in this episode... or at least it will be soon!  The Obama campaign's defenses have now brought back race as an issue with such vigor that it can no longer be called "Playing the Race Card."  This time they're pounding it so hard, I'm going to start tagging it with #RaceHammer because they're coming out like a barbarian wielding a double-headed sledgehammer!

Ken has returned from his hiatus and it was good to have him back on the call.  We talked about the reasons the Obama campaign is twisting, spinning and reaching for every angle in the campaign playbook and then brought out the things they're doing.

Looking at the polls, the "Mittmentum" (as Limbaugh coined it) is picking up! This makes the case that the Obama campaign is growing more and more desperate for every vote it can eke out. They're starting to pull out all the stops an it shows.

Here are the articles we're going to be discussing:
There is a lot beyond this going on in the news. Please take the time to read through some of the other stories for the week

In Line at Wal-Mart

My good friend Fabian Story just posted the following on Facebook:
Ok, so as I am standing in line in Wal-Mart I am privy to a conversation that takes place between two very very verl large women who have carts full of junk foods and processed pre-cooked meals laughing and talking about the fact that the are now going to vote for Obama since they have received their new Obama phone and was able to drop their contract with Verizon and now pay 10.00 a month each for the same plan they were paying 69 for the equivalent services with Verizon. They then proceeded to tell me and another lady in the line that Obama is saving this nation by "giving" everyone healthcare, phones, paying off people's houses and making it harder on businesses to screw us.

I asked her where she worked and she told me she lives off of child support for 5 kids with 4 diff daddy's and she was not ashamed to tell me that she made more by lying in court and making them "pay" than getting a real job. She said that since she did not have to report Child Support as income she lived in "rent assisted" house, gets nearly 1600 in food stamps and other services and she sees this as her right. What are we becoming?
Now, if you talk to Democrats about those who leech off our public support system, they'll tell you these are "few and far between."  Unfortunately, this isn't the only story that I've heard that follows this same narrative. It seems to me like the exception, for some demographics, is becoming more and more the rule.

Even President Obama has said, "I think we should acknowledge that some welfare programs in the past were not well designed and in some cases did encourage dependency.… As somebody who worked in low-income neighborhoods, I've seen it where people weren't encouraged to work, weren't encouraged to upgrade their skills, were just getting a check, and over time their motivation started to diminish. And I think even if you’re progressive you've got to acknowledge that some of these things have not been well designed." (ref: President Obama Admits Welfare Encourages Dependency)

Apparently in some parts of the country, it's not just the past but also the present where this is the case.

Episode 246: Polar Opposites or Verbal Nuances

Well, not only was I not able to find a good media breakdown of the DNC platform, I completely fell short on posting the episode to the website.  My apologies!  We did record on time and the show has been available on our Talkshoe and iTunes feeds as well as on Red State Talk Radio.

Folks, I tried, I reall did! I wanted to have a three week series on the two platforms and then a final comparison. Unfortunately the news and my own research wouldn't comply with my ideas for the DNC, so I'm left with shortening the series to two weeks.

Tonight we are going to look at the results of the DNC convention and compare them to the GOP platform. Here's how this is going to work. Since we used the Politico story Tampa platform's 5 flashpoints as our diving board for the conversation last weekend, we'll use it to identify the starting comparison points tonight. We'll see where things go from there!

I'm not segregating a "made" and "didn't make" list tonight. Here are the links for articles tonight:
